It is no secret that one of the hardest parts about dating is starting the conversation. You see someone you admire while out and you really want to talk to them, but how do you start the conversation? Sometimes the conversation flows easily from a simple hello or a quick introduction, but other times, it’s more difficult. There are a couple of things you can do to get the conversation rolling with someone new.
Approach First The first step in starting a conversation is to approach and get closer. You are not going to be able to start a conversation from across the bar. Proximity is the key to starting a conversation. Move yourself closer to the woman you’d like to start a conversation with, stand near them and say hi. If you see that person heading to the bar, go over and get close to them. Offer to buy their drink, make a recommendation or compliment them on what the woman is wearing or their jewelry. Don’t be shy! Be confident and engaging when starting a conversation. Laugh, smile and be interesting. Try not to talk too much about yourself and by all means, do not interrupt the woman while she is talking and be an active listener.
Find Common Ground A good way to start the conversation is to find some common ground with the person. Find out where the woman is from and perhaps you are from nearby or know someone in the area. This is a good starting point in the conversation. Moving from there, try to find more common ground and interests – ask the person where they went to college, their favorite places to travel or visit and what they do for fun. Finding common interests will not only be a good starting point for conversation but will also keep the conversation going. The key is finding something interesting to talk about with the woman. Often finding something you have in common is the best way to start a conversation.
Be Confident A key element to starting a conversation with a woman is to have the courage to approach them and be willing to put yourself out there. Confidence is one the most important traits that women are looking for in a man. If you show the confidence to just walk right up to the person and engage them in discussion, this will make the woman think you are strong and confident in yourself. Don’t be too sure of yourself to the borderline of cocky – there is a fine line between arrogance and confidence and women can tell. Most importantly, be yourself and relax and the conversation will flow.
